I’ve been a Mickey Rourke fan, well for most of my adult life…films like “Angel Heart“, “A Prayer for the Dying“, “Diner” and “9 1/2 Weeks” are the kind of spirited crap that as a HS geek I would watch on HBO when the programmers on cable put features up worth that were worth a damn…and some of the reasons why I chose to study film leaving HS…
As we all know…the MR train derailled some time before “Wild Orchid” was released…and for me…when a you get PAID to film a piece of work like that soft core porn…and then the model co-star agrees to date and then marry you…hell I might have thought that I could have done anything too…say like attempting to become professional boxer or just ride on my laurels doing crap cameos for the rest of my life…
Most of the world gave up on MR….But my faith in Rourke as an actor never left…people do stupid things…we’re people after all…and Mickey from all reports was more people than the rest of us…but he was indeed still able to run as an actor, his ability to hang almost any demeanor off of his resilient frame, with ranges angry to tender, fearsome or simple to the embodiment of machismo. I always felt his best work was before him…
Here we are…some 26 years after “Diner”…with what looks like Rourke in the lead of what may prove to be a wonderful story…about a washed-up wrestler…told by one of the world’s up and coming directors…Darren Aronofsky and I gotta say…looking at the trailer…and some of the reviews…not the mention the 6 page NYT piece…could there be a comeback left in Mickey Rourke? Find our December 17th…
